Dear Colleague,

I want to bring to your attention opportunities for full-time research analysts in the New York Fed’s Research and Statistics Group starting in the summer of 2021.  Your familiarity with undergraduates at your institution will be of tremendous help in alerting talented seniors (graduating in Winter 2020 or Spring 2021) to our Research Analyst positions.

Analysts play an integral role in the research and policy work of New York Fed economists on topics including macroeconomics, microeconomics, banking and payment systems, capital markets, and international economics. The New York Fed has a highly respected program for full-time Research Analysts who join us for two years after graduating college and then successfully pursue graduate school, private-sector or public-sector positions. Our RAs have consistently been accepted by the very best U.S. graduate programs in economics and finance as well as in law and public policy.

We seek candidates who have records of strong scholarship and academic curiosity.  Analysts usually have a background in economics, policy, mathematics, or computer science, though a major in one of these fields is not a necessity.  Successful candidates often have an interest in academic research, and many are considering careers in economic research, public policy, public service, or related fields.

We explicitly seek candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly those that are typically underrepresented in the economics profession.  Our programs are at the beginning of the “pipeline” to an economics career so it is important to us that we recruit a diverse cohort of Analysts each year. As a representative of your institution and student body, we ask that you please help us in passing this message along to any candidates you may know who may be otherwise hesitant to apply.

Applications for Research Analyst positions are being accepted now, on a rolling basis, at https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/careers/research_analysts/index.html. It is strongly recommended that candidates apply by October 15th.

In a few weeks, we will also post opportunities for Junior Analyst internships (graduating in Winter 2021 or Spring 2022). We will send a reminder e-mail when those positions are posted at https://www.newyorkfed.org/careers/student-programs-and-internships. Please email ny.fed.ra.recruiting@ny.frb.org with any questions.

Sincerely,

Beverly Hirtle

Finance Director

I am the director of Euler Circle, a mathematics institute based in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to teaching college-level mathematics classes to high-school students. Usually we meet in person, but we’re temporarily online like everything else. I am looking for enthusiastic mathematicians to help out as TAs for my classes. My most pressing need is for TAs for my advanced class on Markov chains. We’ll spend the first half of the class discussing the basics of Markov chains, including linear algebra background, probability background, absorbing states, stationary distributions, and random walks. In the second half of the class, we’ll discuss various methods for bounding mixing times. I’m writing all my own notes for the class, but my main reference is the Levin–Peres–Wilmer book “Markov Chains and Mixing Times.”

Each TA will be assigned roughly 5 students to work with throughout the term. You will meet with your students each week to go over their problem sets and progress on expository papers they write. You will meet with them during problem sessions on Wednesday evenings from 6:30–8:30 PM Pacific time. This class will meet for 10 consecutive weeks, with the first TA session being on September 16th. I will pay $700 for the class. If you would enjoy working on mathematics with fantastic high-school students and are interested in this position, please let me know and tell me something about your mathematics and teaching background. You should be at least reasonably comfortable with the material for the class. I don’t expect you to know it all, but if you haven’t studied Markov chains at least somewhat seriously, this particular class probably won’t be a good fit.

Due to employment laws and bureaucracy, I am only able to hire US citizens and permanent residents who are physically in California.

If you are interested in this position or have questions about it, please email me at simon@eulercircle.com.

Thank you,

Simon Rubinstein-Salzedo

Applications for the Daily Bruin’s Design department are now open!

The Design department is responsible for arranging the layout of stories and art for print issues of the Daily Bruin. We also design the layout and user experience of interactive features on dailybruin.com and on Daily Bruin’s social media platforms.

While a good eye for design is helpful, experience is not necessary. Through training, interns will gain a working understanding of Adobe InDesign and print design that can provide valuable experience for the world of print and graphic design, regardless of major. Interns will also learn the principles of web design and how to create engaging designs for digital platforms.

We will host a virtual Open House on September 25th for this Fall for anyone interested in learning more, and we will host an Open House for new freshman and incoming transfers on October 9th.

To read our content and view our projects, visit: dailybruin.com. To apply, go to apply.uclastudentmedia.com. If you have additional questions, please feel free to email Design director Callista Wu at cwu@dailybruin.com!
