UCLA Math graduate student and research assistant, Baichuan Yuan, has been awarded the 2019 National Institute of Justice’s Graduate Research Fellowship. The award will fund Yuan’s research on “Large-Scale Deep Point Process Models for Crime Forecasting” over the next two years in collaboration with the Gang Reduction & Youth Development program (GRYD) in Los Angeles and Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). A total award amount of $149,999 will support tuition, fees, and other research related expenses.

The goal of the GRF program is to increase the pool of scholars engaged in research that addresses the challenges of crime and justice in the United States, particularly at the state and local levels. The NIJ fellowship has a STEM track which supports research in the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, computer and information sciences, and the mathematical sciences.
