UCPD alert: scam targeting students
Please see the UCPD crime alert below regarding a scam that has unfortunately affected several of our students this week. An unknown suspect has been targeting our UCLA students and staff by calling them on their personal cell phones, claiming they are UCPD, and stating they have an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The suspect(s) have demanded money in exchange for the warrant and have requested it via various different platforms. Unfortunately, many students have sent thousands of dollars via money transfer to suspects who are outside the country. The suspects have been “spoofing” our department phone number (310) 825-1491 and staying they are Chief Tony Lee when they call.
Additionally, we have learned that all of the victims who have been targeted this week have their names and phone numbers on the UCLA directory. They have been advised to have their information taken down.
