women in math

about us

Women in Math (WIM) at the UCLA math department is an informal group of women graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and visitors. We are a trans-inclusive and nonbinary-inclusive group. We regularly hold social events and research/career focused events with the goal of fostering community and providing support for the women in the department.

The best way to make sure you hear about these and other events is to join our mailing list. If you want to join the mailing list, have any questions, or want to suggest an event, please let us know at uclawomeninmathematics@gmail.com. You can also fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Our events include:

  • Distinguished Women in Mathematics Lecture Series (DWMLS) – The DWMLS features research talks by leading women mathematicians in any field of mathematics. See below for past speakers and more information.
  • Women in Math Mentorship Program (WIM-MP) – The aim of this program is to provide undergraduate women who are interested in pursuing careers in mathematics with access to advising by current WIM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. See below for more details.
  • Industry Night – Interested in exploring a career in industry? Come hear about the experiences of our invited speaker(s) in a Q&A panel event.
  • Research Night – Come hear from women in the UCLA math department talk about the exciting projects they’ve been working on! We invite speakers in the department from all career stages from undergraduate to faculty to present at this research showcase. If you’re interested in presenting, please join our mailing list or send us an email.
  • Socials and Lunch Meet-Ups – Come chat with and meet the women in the department!
  • Grad School Panel – Interested in grad school but wondering what to expect, how to apply, and how to pick schools? Come to our Q&A panel with current and recent grad students to ask all your questions!
  • Prospective Grad Student Visit – During the open house, current grad students are invited to meet and chat with the prospective students.

The Distinguished Women in Math Lecture Series features research talks by leading women mathematicians. During their time at UCLA, the speakers also meet with the Women in Math group to provide mentorship and build connections across the broader mathematical community.

Mission Statement
The aim of the Women in Math Mentorship Program (WIMMP) is to provide undergraduate women who are interested in pursuing careers in mathematics with access to advising by current WIM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. WIM is a trans-inclusive and nonbinary-inclusive group, and we welcome interest in the Mentorship Program from anyone who would like to try out the space. Our goals include:

  • Building a sense of community for early career women in mathematics fields
  • Increasing the visibility of women in mathematics
  • Providing advice on the difficulties of navigating a mathematics career, with some specific focus on the challenges facing women as an underrepresented minority

Activities

  • Social events and opportunities to get to know the WIM graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and fellow undergrads in the department
  • Small group meetings with mentors to share experiences and ask any questions
  • Opportunities to hear tips for applying to graduate school, conducting research in math, and access to information about outside opportunities for involvement in the math research community

Application Information

  • Applications are available early in the fall quarter
  • Mentors and mentees are matched for the academic year
