UCLA PREP is a unique non-residential program designed to provide premedical students from disadvantaged backgrounds with the means to strengthening their ability and readiness to study medicine. Full participation in the UCLA PREP program allows participants to enhance their chances of being accepted to medical school and succeeding once there.

Important Dates for PREP 2021:

December 18th,  2020 – Online Application Opens

February 11th, 2021  – Round 1 Application Deadline

April 8th, 2021– Round 2 and Final Application Deadline

June 15th, 2021 – PREP Program Begins 

July 9th, 2021 – PREP Program Ends 

Student Eligibility

Students are eligible for UCLA PREP if they have not previously applied to medical school. Community college students, non-California residents, and post-baccalaureate students are eligible to apply. Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Applicants must come from an educationally or economically disadvantaged background.
  • Applicants must be a U.S citizen, hold a permanent residency, or documentation of approved eligibility for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in the State of California
  • Minimum 2.8 Cumulative GPA
  • Applicants should have not taken the MCAT before June 15, 2021
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation, one from a science professor and one from a counselor/premedical advisor or employer/internship recommending participation in the PREP program.
  • Demonstrated interest in addressing issues affecting underserved populations in healthcare.
  • Compelling personal statement

What specific effects has the pandemic had on children and adolescents? How are educators rising to the challenges of COVID-19? What impacts have school closures and remote learning had on gaps in educational equity and academic achievement? How might the pandemic be affecting the neurological and socioemotional development of young people? What can we do to foster resilience in children, adolescents, and families during these difficult times? Our panel of experts will consider all these questions and more, as they discuss coping, trauma, education, and growing up in a global pandemic.
 
Panel moderated by D’Artagnan Scorza, the Executive Director and Founder of the Social Justice Learning Institute and President of the Board of Education for Inglewood Unified School District. He also serves as a lecturer in the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA, is a UC Regent Emeritus and is the current President of the UCLA Alumni Association.

Featured panelists include Adriana Galván, the Dean of Undergraduate Education and Professor of Psychology at UCLA. She is the Co-Executive Director of the Center for the Developing Adolescent and Director of the Adolescent Neuroscience Lab, where she studies the adolescent brain, motivation and learning in youth; Patricia Lester, the Jane and Marc Nathanson Family Professor of Psychiatry, Director of FOCUS (Families OverComing Under Stress) Program, Director of the UCLA Nathanson Family Resilience Center, and the Medical Director of the Family Stress, Trauma and Resilience Clinic at UCLA; and John Rogers, a Professor at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and the Faculty Director of Center X, which houses UCLA’s Teacher Education Program, Principal Leadership Program, and professional development initiatives. He also serves as the Director of UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access (IDEA).
