UCLA Math Alum Ronald Fedkiw ’96 has been named the next Canon Professor in the School of Engineering.

Fedkiw received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCLA under the guidance of Professor Stanley Osher and spent part of his postdoctoral studies at Caltech in Aeronautics before joining the Stanford Computer Science Department faculty in 2000.

Fedkiw’s work has earned him numerous awards, including a National Academy of Science Award for Initiatives in Research, a Packard Foundation Fellowship, a Sloan Research Fellowship, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Ron’s collaborations with Industrial Light and Magic have earned him two Scientific and Technical Academy Awards: one in 2008 for the development of a fluid simulation system, and another in 2015 for software that enables destruction to look realistic in visual effects.

The Canon Professorship was established by Canon USA, Inc. in 1989 to support a faculty member with an interest in image processing or related areas.
