The Healthcare Improvement and Innovation in Quality (THINQ) Collaborative is a group of undergraduate and graduate students working alongside physicians at Ronald Reagan and Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center to conduct quality improvement (QI) clinical research and implement QI modeling towards betterment of patient care quality. We are currently the only group across UCLA that focuses on QI research and hands-on optimizations that directly impacts UCLA Health alongside the support of the Department of Medicine Quality at UCLA Health.

Our program involves clinical research, physician shadowing experiences in multiple departments, data rounding, speaker events from individuals in various healthcare fields, as well as discussions spanning diverse topics in the healthcare industry that affect patients and physicians. We shadow inpatient and outpatient clinics, collect data surrounding QI models in active motion at UCLA Health, present research, and review papers surrounding QI modeling in order to propose solutions to current care QI projects. Many of our current research projects span many components in QI, including but not limited to AI Scribing, Discharge and Care Transitions and Medication Reconciliation, Physician Burnout, UCLA Bridge Clinic, and Interpreter Use (Intersectionality).

We have had previous opportunities to present at several national undergraduate research conferences and submit manuscripts to research journals of varying impact factors. Additionally, we offer hands-on mentorship, leadership opportunities, professional development events, and opportunities to analyze medicine through intersectional perspectives.

We are currently recruiting members of all years and majors for our THINQ 2024 Summer Internship that will later transition into a research fellowship. Applications will be due on Monday, April 8th at 11:59 PM PST. Applications open on Monday, March 11th at 7PM and will be available [here]!

“Ask a Grad Student” is organized by the Department of Computational Medicine in response to requests from undergraduate students in in any major who have questions about applying to graduate school and PhD programs related to computational medicine.  This is open to undergraduates (including first years!) who are considering graduate school in biomathematics, bioinformatics, and similar fields.

Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 12-2 PM

Ask A Grad Student is informal, drop-in Q&A with two PhD students, one in Biomathematics and one in Bioinformatics, who will answer your questions about the application process, letters of recommendation, how to get research experience as an undergrad, Masters vs. PhD, what the first year of the PhD is like, and more.  If they cannot answer your question, they will refer you to someone who can.  You can come at any time between 12-2pm and stay as long as you want. We will provide some coffee, iced tea, and snacks, and we encourage you to bring your own lunch and cup.

Room: 5229 LSB (Life Sciences Building). Fifth floor. Turn left out of the elevator, then turn left again.  Last room on the right.
