We would like to invite you all to apply to the Undergraduate Math Council (UMC) for the upcoming Spring Quarter 2024! The UMC is a student-run, student-led group with the purpose of fostering communication between math students and the department, creating a more inclusive space, and making Math Bruins of all identities feel welcome. This opportunity will provide you with the chance to learn more about the Math Department’s inner workings as well as positively impact the thousands of your peers who interact with the Math Department. The UMC works on a number of projects, including…

  • Running an Instagram to promote math-related events/resources/opportunities as well as raise awareness of the immense diversity of the global Mathematical community
  • Creating student-support resources like advice columns, guides for navigating the math majors, and peer-reviews of math courses
  • Organizing and promoting math-related events, like our quarterly Student-Faculty Mixer, EDI panels, Professor Talks, that discuss everything from educational and career advice to cool areas of math to EDI at UCLA and in math communities

To learn more about the council, please take a look at the following proposal: tinyurl.com/umcproposal23-24

Council members are expected to serve for all of Spring Quarter 2024 and the entire academic school year of 2024-2025, with a commitment of approximately 3-5 hours per week. No formal experience is needed to apply; all we are looking for are students who are…

  • A UCLA undergraduate with more than one year left remaining at UCLA
  • Some form of a Math major, pre-major, minor, or pre-minor
  • Passionate about advocating for students and removing barriers in higher education and STEM

All students, including those from underrepresented communities (BIPOC, low-income, LGBTQ+, undocumented, foster youth, veterans, students with dependents, etc.), are encouraged to apply. Applications are due by Friday, April 5, @11:59pm PT. You may apply here: https://tinyurl.com/umcapp23-24 or at the QR code below. We look forward to reading through your applications and if you have any questions, please reach out to any of the below email addresses!

“Ask a Grad Student” is organized by the Department of Computational Medicine in response to requests from undergraduate students in in any major who have questions about applying to graduate school and PhD programs related to computational medicine.  This is open to undergraduates (including first years!) who are considering graduate school in biomathematics, bioinformatics, and similar fields.

Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 12-2 PM

Ask A Grad Student is informal, drop-in Q&A with two PhD students, one in Biomathematics and one in Bioinformatics, who will answer your questions about the application process, letters of recommendation, how to get research experience as an undergrad, Masters vs. PhD, what the first year of the PhD is like, and more.  If they cannot answer your question, they will refer you to someone who can.  You can come at any time between 12-2pm and stay as long as you want. We will provide some coffee, iced tea, and snacks, and we encourage you to bring your own lunch and cup.

Room: 5229 LSB (Life Sciences Building). Fifth floor. Turn left out of the elevator, then turn left again.  Last room on the right.

OR, you may participate via Zoom:https://ucla.zoom.us/j/96255024007?pwd=blFJdW16MzViYWRUbWFidWsxZkJvUT09

If you cannot make it to this one, don’t worry–we intend to offer it again in February on a different day and time.

Deadline: Thursday, January 18, 2023 at 4 PM

The Mathematics Directed Reading Program (DRP) is now accepting applications for Winter 2024. The DRP pairs undergraduate students with graduate students for quarter-long independent study projects in mathematics. Projects culminate in brief presentations given by the undergraduate mentees in the DRP Colloquium.

For more information about the DRP, please visit our website HERE.

Applications are now open HERE.

Dear undergraduate Physical Science students,

The Queen’s Road Foundation is supporting undergraduate scholarships in the Division of Physical Sciences through the establishment of the Queen’s Road Foundation Undergraduate Fellows Fund.

Each year, one student from each department within the Division of Physical Sciences will be selected to receive a fellowship. U.S. citizenship or residency will not be a requirement as a recipient of this award, but students must be enrolled full-time with a declared major in one of the Physical Sciences departments.

The six departments in the Division of Physical Sciences are:

• Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences

• Chemistry and Biochemistry

• Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences

• Mathematics

• Physics and Astronomy

• Statistics

This fellowship offers junior undergraduate students in the Division of Physical Sciences an opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor on a research project. One student from each department within the division will be selected, for a total of six recipients. This program aims to contribute to gender diversity in the division and to prepare students for graduate study in the physical sciences. Eligibility ·       Must have junior year standing at UCLA (transfer students welcome) ·       Must contribute to gender diversity in the sciences ·       Must be pursuing a major in Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Statistics, Chemistry & Biochemistry, AOS, or EPSS departments ·       Must have a desire to do a two-year research program in your major department ·       Must be planning to pursue graduate studies in the sciences ·       U.S. citizenship or residency will not be a requirement as a recipient of this award

A scholarship subcommittee for Diversity in Physical Sciences, under the administration of the Dean for Physical Sciences, will rank applicants and select the finalists.

Undergraduate students in their junior year will be eligible to apply and winners will receive $15,000 towards their academic year and their summer research project.

To apply, students will be required to participate in the Undergraduate Research Fellows Program (URFP) from the Undergraduate Research Center.

These scholarships will be merit-based only, and applicants must submit applications addressing the following three questions with 100-200 word responses:

  • What are your plans for graduate school?
  • Provide a list of academic papers, conferences, blogs or science books you found interesting
  • Do you have any thoughts or ideas on how to encourage science education?

Finalists must:

  • be prepared to present their views on diversity and inclusion in science
  • be prepared to find a Faculty Research Mentor to join a research lab by Spring quarter
  • agree to conduct their proposed research project with their Faculty Research Mentor during an 8-week summer research program during the summer of 2024 for 40 hours per week.
  • agree to mentor other underrepresented undergraduates in science education.

Program Duration: June 17, 2024, to July 26, 2024.

The David Harold Blackwell Summer Research Institute is a six-week competitive summer activity designed to provide research experience to talented undergraduate students. Students will conduct research in Applied Probability, Analysis, or Theoretical Computer Science, under the supervision of faculty members who are experts in these areas.

We aim to honor Blackwell’s legacy by attempting to increase the number of undergraduate students who aspire to achieve his level of excellence and widen the participation of African Americans in obtaining PhDs in the mathematical sciences.

During the program, each participant will:

  • Conduct research on one of the California campuses under the direction of a faculty member
  • Receive funding for six weeks of lodging, meals, and incidentals.
  • Receive funding for one round-trip travel to California.

After the six-week program, each participant will continue receiving advice from their program mentor for graduate school application and get connected as needed to students with more experience.
