Fall General Meeting 2020 We welcome all those interested in joining UMSA to attend our Fall General Meeting, where we share information about what we do as a club, our events planned for this quarter, and how we aim to assist you in your endeavors. Whether it’s finding the right classes or major, applying to graduate school, or seeking career-related opportunities, UMSA hopes to be a valuable resource for all our members. Of course, it’s worth mentioning that despite our being math majors, we do try to reasonably socialize, so we do host socials as well, even though this year most events will take place online.

Directed Reading Program:

DRP pairs undergraduate students with graduate students for quarter-long independent study projects in mathematics.  Projects culminate in a brief presentation given by the undergraduates in a DRP colloquium. DRP will run a bit differently this year due to COVD:

1. DRP meetings will run remotely this quarter.

2. Participants will need a webcam and mic for their meetings.

3. There is some leeway for minor reimbursements for learning materials and hardware; the DRP should not be a financial burden for anyone.

Please click here for the application – https://ccle.ucla.edu/course/view/mathprogs?section=4.

Application deadline: October 9, 2020 at 4:00 pm

Pairing announcement: October 12, 2020

If you have any questions, please direct your inquiries to the DRP team – drp@math.ucla.edu

UCLA Pritzker Center: Bruin Tutor Network

As the school year is picking up, we are looking for another round of tutors that would be interested in volunteering with the Bruin Tutor Network. The program is currently assisting 300 families throughout LA county, many of them needing help in math. Our largest group of youth that are applying are in middle school, so I was hoping that the math department could help us recruit again. A number of caregivers that have applied for their child speak mostly Spanish so we are especially searching for groups of Spanish speaking students. But we encourage student tutors of all backgrounds to apply!

Best,

UCLA Pritzker Center Student Team

NONCONFIDENTIAL // EXTERNAL

Dear Colleague,

I want to bring to your attention opportunities for full-time research analysts in the New York Fed’s Research and Statistics Group starting in the summer of 2021.  Your familiarity with undergraduates at your institution will be of tremendous help in alerting talented seniors (graduating in Winter 2020 or Spring 2021) to our Research Analyst positions.

Analysts play an integral role in the research and policy work of New York Fed economists on topics including macroeconomics, microeconomics, banking and payment systems, capital markets, and international economics. The New York Fed has a highly respected program for full-time Research Analysts who join us for two years after graduating college and then successfully pursue graduate school, private-sector or public-sector positions. Our RAs have consistently been accepted by the very best U.S. graduate programs in economics and finance as well as in law and public policy.

We seek candidates who have records of strong scholarship and academic curiosity.  Analysts usually have a background in economics, policy, mathematics, or computer science, though a major in one of these fields is not a necessity.  Successful candidates often have an interest in academic research, and many are considering careers in economic research, public policy, public service, or related fields.

We explicitly seek candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly those that are typically underrepresented in the economics profession.  Our programs are at the beginning of the “pipeline” to an economics career so it is important to us that we recruit a diverse cohort of Analysts each year. As a representative of your institution and student body, we ask that you please help us in passing this message along to any candidates you may know who may be otherwise hesitant to apply.

Applications for Research Analyst positions are being accepted now, on a rolling basis, at https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/careers/research_analysts/index.html. It is strongly recommended that candidates apply by October 15th.

In a few weeks, we will also post opportunities for Junior Analyst internships (graduating in Winter 2021 or Spring 2022). We will send a reminder e-mail when those positions are posted at https://www.newyorkfed.org/careers/student-programs-and-internships. Please email ny.fed.ra.recruiting@ny.frb.org with any questions.

Sincerely,

Beverly Hirtle
