Dear undergraduate Physical Science students,

The Queen’s Road Foundation is supporting undergraduate scholarships in the Division of Physical Sciences through the establishment of the Queen’s Road Foundation Undergraduate Fellows Fund.

Each year, one student from each department within the Division of Physical Sciences will be selected to receive a fellowship. U.S. citizenship or residency will not be a requirement as a recipient of this award, but students must be enrolled full-time with a declared major in one of the Physical Sciences departments.

The six departments in the Division of Physical Sciences are:

• Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences

• Chemistry and Biochemistry

• Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences

• Mathematics

• Physics and Astronomy

• Statistics

This fellowship offers junior undergraduate students in the Division of Physical Sciences an opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor on a research project. One student from each department within the division will be selected, for a total of six recipients. This program aims to contribute to gender diversity in the division and to prepare students for graduate study in the physical sciences. Eligibility ·       Must have junior year standing at UCLA (transfer students welcome) ·       Must contribute to gender diversity in the sciences ·       Must be pursuing a major in Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Statistics, Chemistry & Biochemistry, AOS, or EPSS departments ·       Must have a desire to do a two-year research program in your major department ·       Must be planning to pursue graduate studies in the sciences ·       U.S. citizenship or residency will not be a requirement as a recipient of this award

A scholarship subcommittee for Diversity in Physical Sciences, under the administration of the Dean for Physical Sciences, will rank applicants and select the finalists.

Undergraduate students in their junior year will be eligible to apply and winners will receive $15,000 towards their academic year and their summer research project.

To apply, students will be required to participate in the Undergraduate Research Fellows Program (URFP) from the Undergraduate Research Center.

These scholarships will be merit-based only, and applicants must submit applications addressing the following three questions with 100-200 word responses:

  • What are your plans for graduate school?
  • Provide a list of academic papers, conferences, blogs or science books you found interesting
  • Do you have any thoughts or ideas on how to encourage science education?

Finalists must:

  • be prepared to present their views on diversity and inclusion in science
  • be prepared to find a Faculty Research Mentor to join a research lab by Spring quarter
  • agree to conduct their proposed research project with their Faculty Research Mentor during an 8-week summer research program during the summer of 2024 for 40 hours per week.
  • agree to mentor other underrepresented undergraduates in science education.

The David Harold Blackwell Summer Research Institute is a six-week competitive summer activity designed to provide research experience to talented undergraduate students. Students will conduct research in Applied Probability, Analysis, or Theoretical Computer Science, under the supervision of faculty members who are experts in these areas.

We aim to honor Blackwell’s legacy by attempting to increase the number of undergraduate students who aspire to achieve his level of excellence and widen the participation of African Americans in obtaining PhDs in the mathematical sciences.

During the program, each participant will:

  • Conduct research on one of the California campuses under the direction of a faculty member
  • Receive funding for six weeks of lodging, meals, and incidentals.
  • Receive funding for one round-trip travel to California.

After the six-week program, each participant will continue receiving advice from their program mentor for graduate school application and get connected as needed to students with more experience.
