Women+ in the Physical Sciences is hosting a Graduate Students Panel this Wednesday, Nov. 4th at 6:00 PM PST

Zoom Meeting ID: 966 613 1159

If you’re trying to figure out if graduate school is for you, what better way than to ask actual graduate students here at UCLA? Come ask and hear more about admissions, academics, research, and more from their perspectives.

We’re compiling all your questions beforehand, so submit them here!

All genders and majors are welcome!

See you there,

W+PS Officer Team ?

If you are an undocumented student in any major interested in gaining research experience, apply for the UndocuBruins Research Program!  This program is designed for juniors, seniors (fifth years and above are welcome to apply), and transfer students in any discipline. The program guides undocumented students through the research process, supports students as they pursue independent research, and provides mentorship on pursuing graduate school (Master’s and Ph.D. programs). Information sessions will take place on Oct. 23rd and Oct. 27th at 5pm (RSVP link here).  The deadline to apply is Monday Nov. 16th. To learn more about the program, and how to apply, visit the UndocuBruins Program Site.

TO: Undergraduate students in Mathematics

Join Mathematics Department Chair, Professor Mario Bonk, and Undergraduate Vice Chairs, Professors Mike Hill and Don Blasius, at a virtual town hall meeting next week on Tuesday, October 20th, 4-5:30PM Pacific Time. We know this is an unprecedented time, and there are bound to be a lot of things on your mind. This is an opportunity for Professors Bonk, Hill, and Blasius to hear from you and respond to your questions.

Please share your thoughts below. One way to provide your input and receive responses to your concerns is if you communicate them before the event.

  1. Can you describe a time you felt supported by the Department or in a math class?
  2. Can you describe a time when you felt unsupported or unheard by the Department or in a math class?
  3. What are some things you have liked about your classes or the Department?
  4. What are some things you would like to see happen/change in the Department in the next year?

If you prefer, you may also provide comments using this Google Form:

UCLA’s premier entrepreneurship fraternity is recruiting virtually this fall! Since we greatly value diversity and different perspectives and all university activities are online, we wanted to reach out to as many interested students as possible with these new constraints. We would really appreciate it if you forwarded the following information to your students and attached the graphic if you can (if not no worries!):

Creators. Innovators. Hustlers. Adventurers. Family.

We are all these, and so much more. We are Sigma Eta Pi, UCLA’s premier co-ed entrepreneurship fraternity–a diverse, passionate group of individuals seeking improvement and alternative viewpoints, committed to maximizing our potential.

Founded in 2010, SEP is the first co-ed entrepreneurship fraternity on the West Coast. With 40+ active members coming from more than 20 different majors at our UCLA chapter, SEP has started over 21 businesses and ventures, including GoGuardian, Everipedia, Boxcamp, Gradstreet, Startup Fair LA, and LA Hacks!

Members strive to create value through innovative pursuits and build friendships that last a lifetime. We value diversity among our brothers and sisters—ALL majors are welcome. Come meet us virtually at rush to learn more about who we are and how you can Escape the Ordinary!

Please see the UCPD crime alert below regarding a scam that has unfortunately affected several of our students this week. An unknown suspect has been targeting our UCLA students and staff by calling them on their personal cell phones, claiming they are UCPD, and stating they have an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The suspect(s) have demanded money in exchange for the warrant and have requested it via various different platforms. Unfortunately, many students have sent thousands of dollars via money transfer to suspects who are outside the country. The suspects have been “spoofing” our department phone number (310) 825-1491 and staying they are Chief Tony Lee when they call.

Additionally, we have learned that all of the victims who have been targeted this week have their names and phone numbers on the UCLA directory. They have been advised to have their information taken down.

Fall General Meeting 2020 We welcome all those interested in joining UMSA to attend our Fall General Meeting, where we share information about what we do as a club, our events planned for this quarter, and how we aim to assist you in your endeavors. Whether it’s finding the right classes or major, applying to graduate school, or seeking career-related opportunities, UMSA hopes to be a valuable resource for all our members. Of course, it’s worth mentioning that despite our being math majors, we do try to reasonably socialize, so we do host socials as well, even though this year most events will take place online.

Directed Reading Program:

DRP pairs undergraduate students with graduate students for quarter-long independent study projects in mathematics.  Projects culminate in a brief presentation given by the undergraduates in a DRP colloquium. DRP will run a bit differently this year due to COVD:

1. DRP meetings will run remotely this quarter.

2. Participants will need a webcam and mic for their meetings.

3. There is some leeway for minor reimbursements for learning materials and hardware; the DRP should not be a financial burden for anyone.

Please click here for the application – https://ccle.ucla.edu/course/view/mathprogs?section=4.

Application deadline: October 9, 2020 at 4:00 pm

Pairing announcement: October 12, 2020

If you have any questions, please direct your inquiries to the DRP team – drp@math.ucla.edu
