Math for LA Info Session

Are you interested in a fulfilling career as a K-12 math educator? UCLA’s Math for LA program* offers an exciting opportunity for undergraduate math majors to earn a CA Teaching Credential and begin teaching full time by the time they graduate! The Curtis Center for Mathematics and Teaching is hosting a Math for LA: Fall 2022 Information Session on Wednesday October 26th @ MS6620 from 4:00pm-5:30pm. Join us to meet other undergraduate students pursuing this rewarding career field as well as the amazing faculty in the Mathematics Department and School of Education who will be supporting you on this journey. UCLA alumni who are current teachers will also be there to share some of their experiences in the classroom!

*Math for LA is a program designed to train undergraduates to prepare for a career in mathematics teaching and teacher leadership. Math for LA’s Integrated pathway and Joint Math Education Pathway were designed by the UCLA Math Department and the Graduate School of education to equip undergraduates interested in teaching mathematics with the necessary pedagogy and a professional understanding of K-12 mathematics content.

Who We Are
The Zero Waste department at UCLA is working toward helping UCLA reach its sustainability target of a 25% reduction of waste per person from 2016 levels by 2025. Some resources that UCLA Zero Waste has to help engage students in zero waste initiatives include the Surplus Stop for students to donate items like furniture or electronics to other students, refillery pop-ups, and a guide to reducing waste in the kitchen.

Scholarship: Undergraduate Research Fellows Program (URFP)

The URFP supports students who are conducting a life science, physical science, or engineering research project with a UCLA faculty member during Winter and Spring 2023. The Undergraduate Research Center – Sciences will be accepting applications for the 2022-2023 Undergraduate Research Fellows Program (URFP) from October 15 – November 15, 2022. Accepted students qualify for academic scholarships up to $3,000.

UCLA Daily Bruin Fall Internships

The Daily Bruin is UCLA’s independent student newspaper organization. It has 18 sections that perform tasks ranging from news writing to video production to web development. Former staffers have gone on to work at major outlets such as the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and ESPN. Applied Mathematics Mentorship Program [STARTS AUGUST 1ST, APPLY NOW]

The UCLA Math Department’s Curtis Center for Mathematics and Teaching would like to share a mentorship opportunity with you:

We invite you to apply to become a teaching assistant and student mentor for 7th – 9thgrade South LA students. With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Balance the Equation (BTE) Grand Challenge for Algebra 1 Initiative, the UCLA Math Department’s Curtis Center for Mathematics and Teaching is launching the Applied Mathematics Mentorship Program (AMMP) this Summer.

In AMMP, we aim to rehumanize mathematics for the majority Black and Latina(o) South LA 7th – 9thgrade students by engaging them as doers and creators of socially and culturally relevant mathematics. These students will be investigating a mathematics question related to the environmental science of their community, the spread of Covid-19 in their community, or current South LA aerospace efforts. Undergraduate students selected for this program will be awarded a stipend up to $2500!! (Express interest now to receive the maximum amount!) We are currently looking for undergraduate mentors to support the environmental science investigation.

Undergraduate students selected for this program will need:

  1. To be a sophomore, junior, or senior STEM major for the 2022-2023 academic school year.
  2. To attend an in-person Team Lead training for one week on August 1st – 5th from 8:30am – 3:30pm. *Attendance is necessary to receive the maximum stipend amount. If you are interested but have some conflicts, please reach out to see if we can come to some agreement.
  3. To be available every Wednesday from 10:30am – 2:20pm during LAUSD’s Fall semester (August 17th – December 10th). *This time frame includes travel time to one of our partner schools and back to UCLA campus, as well as the time when you will be mentoring students in the classroom.
  4. To be able to attend three additional Team Lead trainings on the following Saturdays: September 10th, September 24th, and October 8th from 8:30am – 3:30pm.

ASL Summer Intensive Scholarship! (Applications due 6/10)

ASL SUMMER INTENSIVE SCHOLARSHIP 2022

The ASL Summer Intensive Scholarship was established to give UCLA students who are driven and passionate about learning American Sign Language the opportunity to take the ASL Summer Intensive course without financial burden. This scholarship will cover the full cost of the course. It is funded by a crowdfunding campaign started by UCLA students who are passionate about bringing greater access to—and knowledge of—ASL and Deaf culture to the UCLA community.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible students interested in applying must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a UCLA undergraduate student enrolled in ASL 8 in Summer Sessions 2022
  • Have a 3.0 GPA or above
  • Demonstrate financial need based on FAFSA and UCLA Financial Aid Office

Important Policies

Student must complete the full 8-week course to remain eligible. Scholarship will be rescinded if recipient drops the course.

Application Submission

Applicants should submit a written application in PDF format to the Linguistics UG SAO Leigh Bagood at leigh@humnet.ucla.edu which includes the following:

  • Full Name, UCLA 9-digit UID#, Major, and ASL 8 Section#
  • 1-page essay (approx. 500 words) that answers the following prompt:
  • Why are you taking ASL and how do you intend to utilize ASL beyond the course (in your personal life, in your community, etc.)?
  • Attached documentation of financial need

Join the Glendale Learning Program Board of Directors!

If you are interested in getting a jump start on leadership experience here at UCLA, GLP might be the organization for you! We are open to all majors, class levels and overall interests so anyone and everyone is welcome to apply to have a board position or join as a general member as well! If you have a passion for education as we all do, join as a GLP Board Director today!   

GLP’s mission is to empower its students through tutoring and mentorship so that they not only gain the confidence to succeed academically but develop a life-long love for learning. Volunteers work with students grades 6th to 8th to help them complete their school work, review any challenging subjects, and reinforce key concepts. We guide our students through a 30-minute activity that exposes them to topics in health, STEM, and personal growth and development in addition to the individual help. Tutoring currently takes place virtually on select Saturdays from 10:30am-11:50am, however as the pandemic situation changes, we will make adjustments accordingly and we hope to transition back to in-person tutoring once again. In the case of in-person tutoring, dates are susceptible to change starting next fall, but transportation and other accommodations will be provided for volunteers. It is not mandatory to be available for every site day, so there is always room for flexibility around your individual schedules! For director positions, we have multiple positions open, varying in interest and time commitment. The application below has a complete list of what each entails!

IMPORTANT NOTE: 

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to adjust our usual program and are currently holding tutoring site days online for the safety of our members and students. However, we have been monitoring the situation and plan to start transitioning back to “in-person” tutoring this upcoming year. Though we are living in uncertain times, we remain excited and hopeful for another year of fulfilling our goal as mentors.

Housing Relief Award Initiative

Hello,

The Meet Material Needs committee within the USAC Office of the Internal Vice President is launching its Housing Relief Award Initiative. This award is to assist UCLA undergraduate students who are experiencing financial difficulties affording housing and living expenses which may interfere with their focus on academics. Grants are awarded on an as-needed basis and each student may receive up to $950.

We are launching the application this week and would like your help in spreading the word. If you are able, please post the link on your social media platforms. We encourage all undergraduate students with financial need to apply.

The application can be found here. It is open on a rolling basis until the end of Spring Quarter. The sooner the application is received the sooner the award will be processed. Here is a document that also contains some frequently asked questions about the application process.
